The day the music died

By the way, I have Vh-1 on, because it is the only thing that currently doesn't have either infomercials or some kiddie fare on (and I refuse to watch news while I am in my fragile morning state) and they just played a snippet of Mariah Carey doing Def Lepard's "Bringing on the Heartbreak." This is worse, much worse, than that time (thanks to a "friend" of mine) that I saw a video of Celine Dion and some other pop-skank (name mercifully forgotten) doing a live cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me (All Night Long)." Just close your eyes and imagine the Canadian wailer shrieking "knocking me out with those American thighs!" Damn, people, just destroy my entire past, why don't you?

Mariah Carey - [shudder]
Def Lepard - [shudder]
Celine Dion - [shudder]
AC/DC - [okay, this is moving in the right direction]

Good Gawd, apparently I'm REALLY old because I can't listen to a damn one of them ('cept a little AC/DC). And I'm not known for being overly particular.

I like Def Leppard, been listening to them since their first record. I think DL should be supported for sticking by their drummer when he lost an ARM. Most bands would have ditched him and I admire that kind of loyalty to yer mates. (Granted their recent output baring their last disc was pretty sub-par.) Besides, DL never took themselves too seriously, like Motley Crue and Poison. They never went through a "serious" period (aka head firmly rammed up their collective creative rectums) even thought Slang vered a bit into "modern" sound.

One person how can cover AC/DC is Norah Jones, she ended her London gig with a version of 'Ride On', which was stunning.

Celine Dion covering "You shook me all night long"? Get out. You're making this up.

That is too funny. I almost want to have seen it. (But afterwards I'd feel like Homer Simpson apres the teachers' talent night: "I paid. I saw Krevafel's butt".)

On the subject of screwing with other peoples music... was in a bookstore about two years ago with my daughter, and something about the music playing caught my ear, realized it was Mariah Carey doing 'If You Could Read My Mind', from Gordon Lightfoot. I told my daughter to listen, she caught what it was, and I told her that Carey must pay for this.

Same when Madonna crapped up 'American Pie'. Leave it alone, stupid!

Next: Britney Spears does a cover of "Hey Jude".

Someone stop the madness!
