Sitting ducks

David at Cronaca comments on reports that British forces in Iraq, whose "friendly" cloth caps and lack of "intimidating" body armor had been contrasted favorably with the scary, brutish American forces, have been taking casualties. He is wondering when the anti-flak-jacket folks are going to make note of this unpleasant side effect of dropping your guard in a war zone. Well, let's listen:

Crickets chirping.

Oh well, I'm sure they are busy typing up retractions. Yeah.

Hmmm.

Iraqis attack US forces, suited up in body armor and the like, and they inflict one casualty a day.

Iraqis attack UK forces, who are not so suited up, and kill 6 and wound 8, in pretty much one swoop.

The casualty figures alone would seem to speak for themselves.

According to an AP report released this morning, the Iraqis attacked British troops because British troops had killed four Iraqi civilians during a demonstration.

Yesterday’s reports said that British troops were shocked by the attack, and that it was unprovoked. I thought that things were going so well in Basra - and I don’t remember hearing about this demonstration before this morning. Very strange.
