Acidman has a running thread on the subject of women's blogs, and how they are just too durned pretty, like those homes where the toilet paper is hidden under a crocheted cover. So what do you think -- is my blog 1) too pretty, or 2) not pretty enough? I've been feeling like doing a (drumroll) site redesign...
Posted by Andrea Harris at June 18, 2003 11:25 AMThis is not nearly as "pretty" as the previous design. It looks almost "manly," especially when you throw in some Sailor talk.
Posted by: bryan at June 18, 2003 at 11:39 AMThe design of your blog isn't bad looking at all, more importantly, to me anyway, it's clear. Some blogs have so much cutesy design that the text gets crowded out.
Redesign if you wish, it's your blog. Please don't sacrifice the admirable clarity of this site.
Isn't it a woman's prerogative to change her mind?
If you find a "pretty" way to keep the trolls away, let me know.
Posted by: charles austin at June 18, 2003 at 11:58 AMBeauty is only skin deep, and you can't judge a book by its cover (and I also avoid trite phrases like the plague). The point of course is that I visit you first everyday for what's inside, not for the aesthetics.
Forced to characterize the wrapping, I would say functional but boring. Perhaps a periodic change in the photo would do the trick (although staying with the LTR theme works for me). Maybe the pic could reflect your state of mind on a particular day (i.e. Pippin when playful, Faramir when reflective, Aragorn when slaying trolls....).
Or just leave it alone and keep dishing out the good stuff. Anything is fine as long as it is not cliche. That's my two cents worth.
Posted by: John McCrarey at June 18, 2003 at 12:18 PMI enjoy your site redesigns. I never know what I'll find when I click the link. Kind of exciting actually [g]
Posted by: Ith at June 18, 2003 at 12:50 PMDaaahh-ling I love your blog no matter what you do with it, but if prettying it up a bit would irritate Acidman some more then I'm all for it. :-)
Posted by: Lynn S at June 18, 2003 at 01:37 PMJust lose the pic of that little gay guy in the top corner... or give him an AK-47 or something.
Posted by: Kim du Toit at June 18, 2003 at 02:42 PMThe thing about Acidman is, he doesn't like redesigns because he can't. If he could, his site would probably be awash in shades of mauve and puce, and all kinds of animated hopping bunnies and cutesy MIDI sounds. But no snakes. Or kittens. Just bunnies.
He doesn't gripe about my site because I've stuck with the same scheme since about 1947. So to piss him off I had to rattle my tipjar. In comments on HIS blog yet!
Didn't work so good. Maybe I need to come up with something else.
Posted by: McGehee at June 18, 2003 at 03:27 PMPerhaps a blog design should be like a store window display. One week, tidy angles, a neutral scheme and one tastefully place shoe. The next week, an excess of kittens, kittens everywhere, kittens out the yinyang. Following week, a quietly zen scheme with cryptic icons.
Man, I love saying "kittens out the yinyang."
Hell, I liked the slashing knight guy. But then again, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to change. I liked the sorta in-line quatloo stuff, too. Anyway, echoing the consensus - do whatcha want, content is King, er Queen. Whatever.
Posted by: Ray Eckhart at June 18, 2003 at 03:51 PMApparently the suggestion that Acidman would put animated hopping bunnies on his site wasn't insulting enough. This is going to take some more thought.
Posted by: McGehee at June 18, 2003 at 06:04 PM*LMAO
I'm still waiting for A-man's response to McGehee's insults.
Your site is nice eye candy.
As long as you don't get that awful design firm, Glitz, Flash, and Bang, in to do the redecorating, anything decent is fine. Text legibility is key!
Posted by: MommaBear at June 18, 2003 at 07:13 PMI mean, this current (re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)(re)design is what, 72 hours old? I think it's on it's last legs.
Posted by: Scott Chaffin at June 18, 2003 at 08:58 PMI didn't just insult Acidman.
Although I think I prefer Gay Frodo to Acidman's ugly half-nekkid body on his website.
Posted by: Kim du Toit at June 19, 2003 at 12:55 AMI definitely need to use more red meat if I'm gonna bait the Cracker.
This is going to require a lot more thought...
Posted by: McGehee at June 19, 2003 at 09:47 AMThe Frodo pic rocks!
If Flamer-what-his-handle thinks your blog is too pretty, I must conclude that he may be in need of significant psychological help.....or that he has rocks in his head (whichever is the lesser insult).
In a totally off topic subject, my headache predicts lots of rain and a stationary front moving in here. I hate air pressure migraines (especially the spots/lines in my vision and the light sensitivity), but thank God for Frova and Maxalt! Since May I haven't lost a day of work/study/teaching. Hours, yes, but not a full day! Migraines would make a good topic on a blog, ya think?
