Dissenter-ed

Wow. Bizarro World sucks. Poor John Naughton. Can't someone go through a wormhole or a stargate or something and rescue him from the Evil Alternate Universe?

Stargates don't go to alternate universes. You need that weird-ass mirror thing for that.

But, yeah, you have to wonder what Naughton's been smoking.

I do wish British journalists would stop fretting over what's happening on the potentially-restricting-civil-liberties front in the US and expend their energy making a case against it in the UK, where it's bad enough.

You mean stuff like this proposal (via Jeff Jarvis) to "protect the privacy rights of celebrities"? Hey, [OBLIGATORY ORWELL REFERENCE] some of us are more equal than others... [/OBLIGATORY ORWELL REFERENCE] And of course there are those wonderful "the eyes are watching you" posters.

If the U.K. is lucky, they might be able to keep their wonderful libel laws, where truth isn't a sufficient defense, as it is here in America.

I find it amusing to be lectured on civil liberties by someone from a country that:

has no written constitution

has essentially banned firearms

makes it a crime to criticize religion

has a long history of colonization

restricts the right to a jury trial

restricts habeas corpus

controls the public airwaves and forces people to pay for it

gotta stop, my fingers are getting sore.
