We the Sheeple

The award for Most Condescending Remark of the Week goes to Adam of Words Are Mean Things -- oops! I mean Words Mean Things, in the comments to this post. Sayeth the man named for the original man:

Americans are emotional and have little or no memory.

Yeah, I guess that's why we are still bickering over the effects of things like the Civil War, World War 2, Vietnam, and -- what was that thing that happened in New York a couple of years ago? Some sort of transportation accident?

Adam has a stern warning on his blog: "don't try your amateur psychoanalysis on me. EVER." Okay. I'll just call him a big jerk instead.

Update: speaking of condescension -- man, I love it when someone sashays into a blog comments fray and acts as if no one but them had figured out yet how to use those weird "search engine" thingies on this here "enter-net." (Scroll wayyyy down to "eve's" comment, and read my reply, if you are curious.)

I'm honored by your award, Andrea. Someone who uses phrases like "fuck yourself with a rusty screwdriver, okay? You mindless cunt" definitely knows her stuff when it comes to insulting weblog behavior.

And as for the tagline, didn't you recognize I got that from you? :-) It's so good I've left it up for more than a month; I usually change taglines more often than that.

Do I win anything?

Didn't you read the first line of the post? That's the award you won.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 14, 2003 at 10:41 AM

By the way, it's flattering to think that I have had such influence on someone's website design. I'll be sure to keep on supplying insults, quips, and bon mots for my audience. It's the least I can do -- for the People™.

I meant, did I win a prize or something, like a "washer and dryer chosen especially for me."

You'll have to be content with the gratitude of all mankind.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 14, 2003 at 12:02 PM

So have you two set a date for the wedding yet?

Posted by: Miss Anthropy at June 14, 2003 at 12:19 PM

We thought you could put up the announcing webpage. You're so good at that kind of thing.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 14, 2003 at 12:34 PM

Wow. Eve sure is determined to prove something, even if her communication/reasoning skills are a little weak.

This thing is going to be like one of those fire in an underground coal mine. It just is going to keep bursting into flames every couple of days.

Let me get this straight. Adam says that Americans have little or no memory. You make fun of this statement, then make fun of his tagline, which is a direct quote from you which you don't remember. How can you have your head that far up your ass and not notice?

Posted by: Sparky at June 14, 2003 at 05:44 PM

Dear Sparky,

WHERE THE FUCK DO I SAY I DON'T REMEMBER?

You asshole. I thought I told you to stay off my blog.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 14, 2003 at 06:06 PM

Anyone with a sixth grade reading level would deduce that you didn't remember from reading the above exchange.

I thought you might have noticed I don't care if you tell me to stay off your blog.

Posted by: Sparky at June 15, 2003 at 12:24 AM

You deduced wrong. And I guess now your hosting service will be get a complaint of harrassment from me.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 15, 2003 at 12:29 AM

It seems the sucky people are visiting you, too. Sorry. I want these people to go away, too--like to Hell.

But, to be completely Pollyanna about the whole thing, there's you, Rachel, Misha, Frank J, Steve den Beste, Michele, Bill Whittle....

I'd put up with a million assholes, just to have had the pleasure of virtually knowing these fine folks.

Posted by: Mrs. du Toit at June 15, 2003 at 01:10 AM

If you're trying to scare me, it's not going to work. If you're actually sending a complaint to my web host, you're even stupider than I thought. It's not like I'm using my web site to post comments on your web site. Why should they care if their systems aren't involved?

Posted by: Sparky at June 15, 2003 at 02:14 AM

Yeah. Still, I am quite disappointed in the human race right now.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 15, 2003 at 02:14 AM

Okay. That does it.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 15, 2003 at 02:17 AM

Sparky, you might want to look into the concept of "IP address".

I suspect you're in for a very unpleasant surprise.

Posted by: NotTheBrightestSpark at June 15, 2003 at 02:18 AM

He is.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 15, 2003 at 02:25 AM

Thanks for the advice, but if I was not familiar with IP addresses and good few other internet concepts, I wouldn't be able to post at this point.

As for harassment, the good people at Working to Halt Online Abuse (http://www.haltabuse.org/) seem to think that "... messages posted to any open venue, such as ... a web-based board ... are seldom truly harassing unless they're forged to appear to come from you or contain direct threats or libelous statements."

Well, this is a publicly accessible web site with a comment submission form. There is no password restricting access. At no point have I forged my comments to appear to come from you. I have not threatened you at any point, and I intend you no harm. My statements have and continue to be purely expressions of opinions and not assertions of facts.

Good luck.

Stop posting on my website, Mr. Paulsen. I don't want you here.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at June 15, 2003 at 03:05 AM

And I'm closing this comment section, since there isn't anything of substance going on here anymore.
