In the belly of the cod

Among the reasons why I might be tempted to keep the cable teevee: the cool stuff that does occasionally turn up. For one thing, BBCAmerica is showing a David Bowie concert right now. He's still the nazz. Also, I saw some of The Iron Chef. Either the Japanese are one seriously fucked up people, or they are the coolest nation on the planet. Tonight's theme was cod. Or as the Iron Chef expressed it: "Caaaahhhhhddd!" One of the guest/contestant chefs was one of the Japanese royal family's chefs. The look on his face clearly said: "I went to Japanese haute cuisine school for this?" I had to change the channel, though, because eating leftover pizza does not mix well with the sight of some guy digging brain-colored roe out of a giant cod's guts.

The classic "Iron Chef" moment is at the end when the guest chef inevitably loses before the Iron Chef's masterful cooking (hah!). I think the show is rigged. But it's a hoot when you can't get to sleep. For better ratings, maybe they could have the Iron Chef caged death match, where the loser gets beheaded ... or at least loses a finger or something.

My favorite Iron Chef episode is the one where a chef made ice cream out of squid ink. Those people will eat anything.

Woah! Goth ice cream! It's black and it tastes like dead people!

Oh, that was too tasteless, but I couldn't resist.

"Either the Japanese are one seriously fucked up people, or they are the coolest nation on the planet."

I don't think it's either/or. They're both.

If your cable provides the "Trio" channel, check it out. Quirky films, filmed live music sessions, etc...

Oh, yeah! I love Trio. The first thing I saw, in fact, when I turned the cable on, was a Simple Minds concert. That band is an old 80s favorite of mine.

I LUV "Iron Chef"! The ep you mentioned is from the "early" days, before the guests got to eat at the long table. Just where else could you observe the masterful preparation of that culinary ecstasy of gourmands world-wide that is CODFISH SEMEN creme brule? Where, I asks ya? Where?!
