They're not all idiots: Lyle Lovett seems to have a bit of common sense when it comes to celebrity views on war and George Bush. (Of course, it might be that he also might have considered the result of the Dixie Chicks' antics, and doesn't want to throw what's left of his own country music career in the crapper.)
Posted by Andrea Harris at March 17, 2003 01:40 PMI saw Lovett on tour with Bonnie Raitt sometime during Bush the elder's bid for re-election, and they were both stumping for Clinton, dedicating a duet of "(Get Out of the Way and) Let a Boy Do a Man-size Job" to Bush I. Possibly subsequent events caused him to reconsider his position in the interim.
Posted by: Kerry at March 17, 2003 at 02:16 PMI saw that same double bill last summer. The venue was crawling with booths for leftie causes, but, apart from a suggestion from Miss Raitt that we check them out, there weren't any political speeches from the performers (not that I remember anyway), just a few hours of great music. If only more of them would follow that model....
Posted by: Dodd at March 17, 2003 at 04:00 PMLovett has always been thoughtful and intelligent, and I am inclined to doubt that he took this position in reaction to the Vichy Chix imbroglio.
And supporting Clinton in '92 doesn't make you a bad person. An awful lot of people who could have known better had a serious hard on for Bush Senior.
Posted by: Gary Utter at March 17, 2003 at 05:16 PM(Supporting Clinton in '96, on the other hand, makes you a "useful idiot" at best. )
Posted by: Gary Utter at March 17, 2003 at 05:18 PMYou are showing insufficient respect for Lyle. A good man and a great musician. You do know he had his leg shattered about a year ago saving his uncle from a charging bull, don't you?
Lyle makes very intelligent Western music, with a tinge of swing. If you ever get a chance to see, don't pass it up. Andrea, if you go and don't enjoy it, I'll refund the price of your ticket, up to $100.
Posted by: Charles Austin at March 17, 2003 at 09:30 PMI vaguely remember something about him breaking his leg and it having to do with a bull. Hey, I don't mean anything against him; it's just that the actions of entertainers lately has made me cynical against the entire breed. As for listening to him, I enjoy most music live, though I'm not much into country. But I can't even afford to go to the movies, much less a concert. Some day I'll get back into the concert going, though.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at March 17, 2003 at 11:48 PMRon Silver, who recently dismantled Bill Maher with a rhetorical chainsaw over Iraq, was a Clinton supporter in '92...
Posted by: Kevin McGehee at March 18, 2003 at 08:50 AMTo each his own. I'll take Julia Roberts over Lovett any day of the week. ;>)
