Who the hell is Norah Jones?
Posted by Andrea Harris at February 23, 2003 11:26 PMTypically enough, she just got another award... She's the girl that doesn't know why she didn't come...
(Sorry, as infantile as it is, I still get a chuckle every time I hear that.)
Posted by: Paul at February 23, 2003 at 11:28 PMThank you for asking. I eagerly await the answer. I saw this on Yahoo, but I've sworn off music talk for a while.
Posted by: Scott at February 23, 2003 at 11:30 PMWhoever the frack (10 points for the reference) she is, she won Best New Artist so she's presumptively doomed. I'd be very surprised if this, the first time I ever heard of her, was not also the last.
Posted by: David Jaroslav at February 23, 2003 at 11:46 PMApparently she's the daughter of Ravi Shankar (or so says Yahoo).
Who is famous for appearing on an episode of the Krusty the Klown show.
Posted by: Jeremy at February 24, 2003 at 12:40 AMFor you to not know Norah Jones is like never tasting honey. You're truly missing out, and I do hope you catch up soon.
Posted by: Joshua Claybourn at February 24, 2003 at 02:41 AMIndeed, Norah Jones is quite lovely. Lileks commented a couple weeks ago about how all music these days sounds like it's going from 0 to 60 in three seconds--this was the same day that I was telling a friend of mine at work that most music today seems like a hooker that just wants to get paid, where Norah Jones is more like the girl who won't do more than hold your hand til the second date, and only that if you do something special and quiet together.
(I have a wide range of music likes, including a lot of the stuff you've mentioned on here, so you may like her, or not.) :)
Posted by: Erica at February 24, 2003 at 05:22 AMI was happy for Norah, too. I love the sound of her voice. Very 1930's-bluesy.

Battlestar Galactica, where you know the humans are Not Of This Earth by their curses, time-intervals ("centons" and "millicentons"), and their clearly-labeled technology ("Languatron").
Gimme my points!
(Guess you saw the BG marathon on 2/17 too, huh?)
Posted by: Ian Wood at February 24, 2003 at 10:19 AMIan,
Oh felgercarb, you got it! 10 points for you.
Everyone else,
Well, I didn't say I didn't like Norah Jones, just that I hadn't heard of her and that Best New Artist IS generally the Kiss of Death Award. For the record, what I did hear I liked, so I have to inquire further.
Posted by: David Jaroslav at February 24, 2003 at 10:30 AMAndrea, don't know your musical tastes fully, but Norah Jones (a Texan btw!) is probably pretty close to jazz/blues. When I first heard her on the radio, I was thrilled, because being a jazz fan, it was like spring water in the desert to me. She reminds me a lot of the old-style jazz singers. I love her rendition of Elvis Presley's "One Flight Down." She could have stood to spike her album with one or two more fast paced songs, as most of them were VERY low key...but the music is very moody and lovely.
Can you tell I have been impressed? I am glad she won some awards. Maybe now we'll see a return to some GOOD music.
Posted by: Sharon Ferguson at February 24, 2003 at 10:49 AMHeh . . . "Who the hell is Norah Jones?" is the first thing I typed after reading the Grammy roundup this morning.
Posted by: Phil at February 24, 2003 at 11:06 AMHeh -- great minds think alike!
Anyway, I may check her out, because I do like jazzy, bluesy stuff. The song snippet of hers that they kept playing, though, sounded like that awful cooing, "soft" pop that they play on the R&B stations in between rap tunes. I can't stand that kind of music. Otherwise, I have eclectic tastes. I even like zydeco (only in New Orleans, though. It just doesn't sound right anywhere else.)
Posted by: Andrea Harris at February 24, 2003 at 11:19 AMI've seen ads for her album on TV and thought she was the modern version of a K Tel artist (boy, am I dating myself!) Though there was no offer for a shredder or ginzu knife.
Posted by: Ith at February 24, 2003 at 11:58 AMUM, if you have been reading my reviews on Blogcritics you would know. She is a brilliant jazz singer who has snuck into the charts. I have seen her in concert, she is amazing.
