Isn't it interesting how the majority of Solonor's Bad Song Nominees, a.k.a., "Songs that make you want to PUKE," (which are all my least favorite songs in the whole world too!) come from a certain decade? (cough the Seventies cough) The Seventies were HELL. They SUCKED. Don't you forget it. PREVENT THE SEVENTIES FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN.
Posted by Andrea Harris at January 6, 2003 10:37 PMHence my post from last week on why I feel cheated that I grew up in the 70's and not the 80's.
Posted by: michele at January 6, 2003 at 10:48 PMNext time the '70s come around why don't we just skip over to 2080...
Posted by: Dave at January 6, 2003 at 11:01 PMI hereby declare that the 70's never happened. Since modern academia says there's no objective reality, I feel better already.
Posted by: David Jaroslav at January 6, 2003 at 11:28 PMHe's got a lot of nerve putting Cheap Trick on that list.
Posted by: Dave Himrich at January 7, 2003 at 12:49 AMWell, there was a point where if I had to hear "Dream Police" one more time I was going to stick a screwdriver in both my ears. Come to think of it, I'm still at that point. Oh god, now I have that song in my head... [BANG]
That's better. Nothing like a ball-peen hammer to the noggin to get a bad song out of it. Now -- who am I?
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 7, 2003 at 12:57 AMHmmm...well, the list has "Wildfire" on it, which makes it legitimate. But some of those have a little value for me. I mean, The Village People, how much fun are they? Who would we have to make fun of if it weren't for them?
My only candidate for removal? "Reminiscing". Laugh all you want; I really like that song. The rest can stay.
Posted by: David Perron at January 7, 2003 at 06:44 AMHey! The seventies wasn't just bad disco, it gave us the beauty of prog-rock. :)
Posted by: Tim Hall at January 7, 2003 at 06:45 AMUhhh...Solonor forgot to put in a few songs by Styx. Notably, that Mr. Roboto song and "Babe", which was a nauseating piece of crap. Also, what happened to the entire collected works of the Bee Gees, with extra credit to "Tragedy"?
That said, I saw Styx on their "Paradise Theater" tour, and it was sonically one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I don't normally go to many concerts because of the poor sound quality (case in point: INXS/Public Image Limited at the old Orlando Convention Center) but Styx's sound was sterling, and they are arguably a decent rock and roll band. There was a brief period in my life where I went to concerts as dates, and so went to a few that I'd rather not admit. Like Air Supply. Yechhh.
Best concert seats ever? U2, Dallas, 1985. Camped out all night at the Sears/Ticketmaster outlet, and was second in line for tickets, anywhere. Got front row, left, center. Also 4th row center aisle. We were so far forward all we could hear (practically) was the stage monitors. Very, very clean sound. I was very into U2 at the time.
Oh, and thanks a heap, Solonor, for causing the music for each and every one of those steaming piles of crap to waft through my mind once more.
When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you watch your friends (you know you watch your friends, you better look out...)
Posted by: David Perron at January 7, 2003 at 07:52 AM...but there was solace for those of us who endured the pop music of the '70s in the works of Jethro Tull and Steeleye Span...
Posted by: Brian Swisher at January 7, 2003 at 11:32 AMi'm going to stick my neck out here and admit that i like a lot of the songs on that list. i like 70s music. of course i also like industrial, opera, big band, hard rock, classical, etc etc. i'll listen to just about anything except rap. i can't stand rap.
however, most of his "winners" are songs i can't stand as well. the idea of people actually listening to "Muskrat Love" for pleasure gives me the shivers.
Posted by: chris at January 7, 2003 at 11:56 AMI think the "winners" were the winners of the bad song contest, and therefore the worst songs of the lot.
I like a lot of those songs, too. How dare he put John Stewart's "Gold" up there?? That always sends my toes to tapping.
You know you're old when you hear a song you despised when it was new, and think, "Wow. Good song." Case in point: "Play That Funky Music".
Ahem. AND I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED "SEASONS IN THE SUN". Thank you, that is all.
Posted by: Angie Schultz at January 7, 2003 at 12:57 PMAhem. AND I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED "SEASONS IN THE SUN". Thank you, that is all.
that's nothing. i am inordinately enamored of "Everlasting Love."
swoon
Posted by: chris at January 7, 2003 at 04:48 PMPlease note that this was a group effort from before I met all you wonderful bloggers. I am not responsible for all of the nominees, nor for all of the winners (though the "winners" were unanimous choices, so I guess I am a bit blameworthy there).
I think I'm going to do another one soon, since it seems to be such a hot topic with bloggers.
For the record, I can't forgive anyone for not sticking a hot knife through their left eyeball every time "Seasons in the Sun" is mentioned (much less played). Ow.
Posted by: Solonor at January 7, 2003 at 05:21 PMOK, time for a comment from the ROG (ReallyOldGuy). The 70's, how well I remember....uh,something. Oh! I know. I was in college then! But that was BD (Before Disco). But don't blame me for disco, I couldn't stand it either! While I readily agree, there's a boatload of crappy songs on the list, I feel I must "defend" my generation's music: some of it was great, and some of it sucked. But, overall compared to what passes for music these days, give me a break!! eminem, britney, jlo, (insert any rapper here), all the young "white guy" bands whose idea of singing is screaming the f-you lyrics as loudly as they can! Oh, yeah! That's music that will stand the test of time!
Makes you wonder what someone's "Bad Song" list will look like in 20 years, doesn't it.
I will now grab my cane and wobble off to bed. Rock On
Posted by: rinardman at January 7, 2003 at 10:58 PMThe 70s so ruled, it's not even funny. Sure, go try to buy a bitching 68 Camaro now on a grocery clerk job - you'd have to be selling smack these days to get a car that cool. You 70s hatehs are crazy!
"Dazed and Confused", the movie. That says it all. We are what we were, disco and Alice Cooper and all, and I want my wings and puka shells back from the bunch of whipper-snappers that have subsumed them. Where's Gregg Allman when I need him?
Grumble, grumble...YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!
Posted by: Scott at January 8, 2003 at 01:29 AMCase in point: "Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music (1976)"
Find one song in the last 25 years that can move a room like that song can. I could walk into any place on earth and slap that one on and have everyone shaking their groove thing* in 20 seconds.
Silly lop-eared pups. Feh!
*Oh, I forgot...yall don't do that anymore, do you?
Posted by: Scott at January 8, 2003 at 01:32 AMKinda like a "bling-bling" perhaps? (You see, I have no idea what a bling-bling is, so it could be the same)
Posted by: rinardman at January 8, 2003 at 07:44 PMYou have forgotten the worst of the '70s. It wasn't the music, awful as that was, it was polyester. Polyester shirts with wide lapels that clung to you with enough static electricity to power a small city. I cringe at the memory.
Posted by: Swen Swenson at January 9, 2003 at 08:48 PMNo, it was the blow-dried hair. Ever seen any footage of David Letterman early in his career? UGH!
