ONLY 86 YEARS UNTIL THE NEXT WIN

Congratulations to the Fat Man and Slender Sheila on the triumph of their baseballing team, which I understand has not won a game since 642BC. Coverage in Australia was extensive, featuring footage of both Fat and Sheila setting fire to their own cars, although during the playoffs multicultural broadcaster SBS revealed the limits of its multiculturalism by pronouncing "Houston Astros" as "Houston Ass-tross."

Asstross. Combination ass and albatross. Sounds like something for the Kerry campaign.

Baseballing is much more fun than footballing, hockeying, or basketballing. But what do I know, I'm just a St. Louis Cardinals fan, all cryin' in my beer and stuff.

The Pennant races were so much more fun to watch than the World Series. What a snoozer the WS turned out to be.

I literally don't even know where I AM right now. My feet have not touched earth ... I am hung over, my vocal cords shot ...

Thanks for the link, Tim.

The more common sobriquet is "Houston disAstros"...

Posted by: mojo at October 29, 2004 at 05:45 AM

red,

the next bar tab is mine. your sox done good!

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at October 29, 2004 at 05:55 AM

Indeed, the Pennant race between the Yankees and the Red Sox *was* better in terms of suspense and 'sitting on the edge of your seat' moments than the WS (world series). I'm glad I saw those games. Something to remember.

It seems the Cardinals suffered the same affliction that has haunted the Red Sox for decades. The Cardinals were/are a great team, it's too bad they weren't all there for the WS and took such a pounding. Red Sox fans can relate to this affliction, it's what we've lived with for decades.

I guess Hell must have frozen over and pigs must be flying. I still find it hard to REALLY believe the Red Sox won. It's a strange feeling after all these years. In the back of my mind I'm wondering if I've fallen asleep and have just been dreaming. Perhaps I've fallen asleep and the Sox are still playing the Yankees? (The games lasted long enough. I suppose it's possible.)

Mr. Bingley-

It seems like 5 million years ago since we watched them lose at Riviera ... doesn't it??

Posted by: red at October 29, 2004 at 06:13 AM

I was against the Red Sox before I was for them...

Posted by: John Forbes Kerry at October 29, 2004 at 06:17 AM

I hate that I wasn't with either Sheila or Fat to watch these games. Well, I'd prefer Sheila, obviously, but Fat was almost cute after 15 or so tequilas.

Posted by: tim at October 29, 2004 at 06:19 AM

yes, it does; quite a rollercoaster! i'm glad kerry's "favorite red sox manny ortez" did so well in the series, too!

heh.

One of the local talk shows here has had some callers who are VERY ANGRY because one of the Red Sox' pitchers, Curt Schilling (guy with bleeding ankle), has endorsed Bush.

I didn't see it, but on one of the morning shows here (ABC) Curt was being interviewed and he ended the interview urging people to get out and vote and then he encouraged people to vote for Bush. I'm surprised they didn't edit that out.

I bet the ABC isn't very happy they let that slip either.

If I were the Bush people, I'd have Curt tape a message. Play it around this area of the country.

Go Sox - now the world as we know it will never be the same - When is the parade?

Posted by: Jack Tanner at October 29, 2004 at 06:33 AM

I should have added, congratulations to the Red Sox and its fans. I bet it feels great, they sure earned it.

Yes, Schilling said it on Good Morning America, as Charlie Gibson was ending the segment.

Posted by: Polly at October 29, 2004 at 06:38 AM

Mr. Schilling is entitled to his political opinion, (one which I share) but it is very bad from for him to have mentioned it at that time.

A minor correction: the Sox last Series win was in 641 BC. You've made the common error of forgetting Denny the Runt's calendar correction.

Posted by: Mike at October 29, 2004 at 06:43 AM

you had your chance tim; red was going to make a 'special guest appearance' if we'd gotten together when you were in ny. don't you regret wasting all your time on the rich and famous now?

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at October 29, 2004 at 06:45 AM

True story: when I lived in Florida, Houston had a local minor league affiliate... the "Kissimee Astros." Unfortunately they ended up changing their name to the "Osceola County Astros."

For baseball team nicknames, tho, it just don't get better than the Japanese major league's "Nippon Ham Fighters."

Posted by: iowahawk at October 29, 2004 at 06:48 AM

This is a time for true members of Red Sox Nation to leave politics out of it and enjoy the moment.

86 years we waited for this team to make dreams a reality. I'll be damned if I'm gonna let Lurch come in and ruin it....

Thank you RED SOX!!!!

86 years? Well, boo-fucking-hoo.

Hear that BoSox fans? That's the sound of Chicago Cub Orchestra playing the 1908 Symphony for Nano-Violins.

God: "There. Now Will You Shut the Fuck Up About It Already?"

Posted by: Jim Treacher at October 29, 2004 at 08:42 AM

Ass-tros? Well, maybe.

But I have no doubt my home 9 would have at least bothered to show up for the damn thing, unlike the Cardinals.

By the way, at their inception, the Astros were actually the Houston Colt .45s (after the famous pistol, not the malt liquor brand). Their logo had the long-barrelled pistol displayed across the chest of the uniform.

They changed their name in 1965 to reflect the influence of this new-fangled thing called "NASA" or whatever. No doubt, if they'd kept the name, they'd have been forced to change it by the PC brigade in the 90s. The same one that was responsible for changing the Washington Bullets hoops squad to the infinitely more Tolkienesque Washington Wizards.

Huzzah!

Latest odds.
Bush=$1.99
Kerry=$2.00
It is all square.
20% spike for Kerry what happened?

Posted by: gubbaboy at October 29, 2004 at 11:36 AM

Chris-Why just tape a message when you can have him campaign live and in living color in NH. That's what I heard.

Posted by: YoJimbo at October 29, 2004 at 11:55 AM

Donald Luskin has a post about the unusual trading going on in the Bush-Kerry futures market today. Some people, apparently have too much money on their hands.

As for Mr. Schilling and his support of Bush on ABC Thrusday morning, he apparently has already been signed up to campaign with Bush in New Hampshire this weekend. The really fun part, though, is to see what die-hard Kerry supporters who are also die-hard Boston Red Sox fans are going to do when Curt passes by sitting in his convertable during the Sox' upcoming victory parade. Given the high number of Bush=Hitler true believers in the Boston area, to say they're going to be conflicted would be an understatement...

Posted by: John at October 29, 2004 at 12:23 PM

Hey, Tongueboy...at least the Cardinals had a great season by the one criteria that really matters to us Cardinal fans: they finished 16 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs!

Moonbat conclusion: Hitler helped the Red Sox win the World Series. And then the moonbat's head explodes.

Posted by: PW at October 29, 2004 at 12:43 PM

Or alternatively he'll lobby for Hitler to become an honorary citizen of Boston. I'm not sure which one is more likely, actually.

Posted by: PW at October 29, 2004 at 12:45 PM

We're not all moonbats here in Boston. The other day I saw a gargantuan Bush/Cheney banner on a building in Chinatown, and some bumper stickers in a window at the corner of Charles and Beacon. Yeah, and I saw a B/C bumper sticker on a car just this very morning!

So that's... uhhh... three. I bet I could find another one if I looked.

Look on the bright side: Cambridge is worse.

Hid -

My son goes to school in Jamaica Plain. His 1st grade teacher freaked because he told the class that Kerry was Osama's friend.

Posted by: Jack Tanner at October 30, 2004 at 02:56 AM

Rinardman,

Some friends and I want to go to a Cubs/Cards series in Chicago to celebrate the centenial anniversary of the Cubs last World Series win but aren't sure whether that would be 2007 or 2008. I'm thinking 2007 but, either way, you will notice that I'm not saying "if".

Posted by: Tongueboy at October 30, 2004 at 06:21 AM

Tongueboy: the Cubs won the Series in both '07 and '08 so you can take your pick.

Posted by: Annalucia at October 30, 2004 at 10:38 AM

The Red Sox have done quite well in many years between 1918 and this year, but they've always fallen a bit short.

The Cubs have generally fallen a great deal short.
