IYAD ALLAWI STRIKES AGAIN

It’s all happening on Norfolk Island. Until 2002, nobody on the island had been murdered for 150 years; now the place has seen its second homicide in 26 months.

Fascinating listening to Southern Cross news when one of the locals being interviewed about this. He was quite laid back and relaxed about it - as if this sort of thing is commomplace. "Gee, it was back luck and yes, here's another, but..." Shock and trauma (as described by the Herald Sun) were conspicuously absent.

Well, with a population of 1800, that makes this year's present murder rate just under 56 per 100,000 per annum.

The USA has a murder rate of approximately 9 per 100,000 per annum, and even South Africa is less than Norfolk Island at 45 per 100,000 per annum.

The world average is sitting at 5.5 per 100,000 per annum, so statistically this tranquil little island has a murder rate more than 10 times the world average!
