ACCURACY IN MEDIA

AFP gets it right:

Australian anti-war militants will mark the first anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq by joining a global protest against its occupation by the United States and its allies, organisers said.

Meanwhile, the BBC has good news from Iraq:

An economic boom in the southern Iraqi town has meant an increase in the sale of electrical appliances such as fridges and air conditioning systems.

But this good news is actually bad news. Or at least potentially bad news, if the BBC’s prediction is accurate. Here’s the lede:

There are fears of a repeat of unrest in British-controlled Basra this year because the power grid will again be unable to cope despite a $127m (£69m) project to upgrade it.

Damn this occupation! All it brings is misery.

Re "All it brings is misery"

How's this from Hans Blix: "Apart from removing Saddam from power, Blix said he saw no benefit from the invasion".

Apart from making me very angry on behalf of the Iraqi people who indicated their optimism for the future in a recent poll, this reminds me of the old joke "Apart from that Mrs Lincoln - how was the play?"

we know the problems - we have the same problem in Western Australia when the temperature gets higher than 35 degrees!

Channel Nine News in Brisane had a story marking the 1-year anniversary of the Iraq invasion, and twice they mentioned that "few had any reason to celebrate".

I am putting together an Aussie Care package to send over to the blokes in Baghdad to celebrate the 1st anniversary. If anybody wants to help or can offer suggestions on where to get stuff cheap so we can send more, let me know.

One thing I haven't heard too much of lately, is trouble in Basra. The Poms must be keeping the local shiites occupied down there. Maybe they've sent Phil Tufnell in to teach them how to play cricket...

How the fuck can one be an "anti-war militant"???!!!

Posted by: murph at March 19, 2004 at 09:47 PM

hey, all those new air conditioners and refrigerators for the beer (allah be praised) put one helluva strain on a power grid.

``How the fuck can one be an "anti-war militant"???!!!''

It's a matter of style. It involves waving badly-scrawled placards equating Bush to Hitler, screaming abuse at the passersby who won't take your ``NO WAR'' button, blocking traffic, breaking a few windows for good measure, and generally behaving like a sociopathic piece of dog shit.

There are fears of an increase in the size of the hole in the ozone layer and global climate fluctuations as a result of Iraq's new found wealth.

Rexie, thanks for that quote by Blix. Removing Saddam was the entire point -- leave it to a UN egghead to pretend that 12 years of increasingly useless resolutions and sanctions left any other alternative but to forcibly remove him.

"The UN: we're in love with dictators, but we like to talk tough about them!"

How the fuck can one be an "anti-war militant"???!!!

It's actually pretty easy if you live in a pomo Bizarro world where:

-Freeing 25 million people from a Stalinist dictator = an illegal war of conquest and rapine

-Enforcing the resolutions of the world body whose very mention brings you thrills of religous ecstacy = an illegal war of conquest and rapine

-The mysterious disappearance of documented WMD, which would elicit alarm amongst normal, sentient human beings instead prompts you to unleash a monsoon of schoolyard chants of "Bush Lied, People Died" and "No War For Oil".

Yup, it's pretty easy...

Who are we fooling - these people are trying to remove any obstruction in Europe to aid their hostile friends in the arab world. When the jihadist start to make some movement on their efforts against the Israelis, be sure that they're going to go after the Arab christians and the Kurds next.
These hateful "peace promoters" are foolish and reckless. They no nothing about the world and care more about hating their fellow citizens in Europe and the Americas than carrying any concern for the population of the arab world.
It is about nothing other than their narcissism, their fantasies about the world, and they're only going to help the jihadis kill off my relations in the Middle East.
Who on earth do they think they're kidding. They are abetting a future pogrom - which may come less than 5 years from now.

Actually, 'pro-fascism cocksucker' is more accurate than 'anti-war militant'.

I think it's wonderful that they're finally able to buy air conditioners. Here in Texas people can get pretty ornery during the summer. I can't imagine what it would be like without the miracle of air conditioning.

Posted by: Jeremy at March 20, 2004 at 03:42 AM

"anti-war militants". Is this from the same news source that refers to Palestinian self-exploders and other terroristic murderers by that same word?
What can this tell us about the anti-war crowd?

Posted by: Dave P. at March 20, 2004 at 03:52 AM

Can't you just see the executive producers of the BBC agit-pro...er, news piece pounding his desk, cursing the silver linings and demanding the dark clouds be ferreted out?

"Here in Texas people can get pretty ornery during the summer. I can't imagine what it would be like without the miracle of air conditioning."

I haved in Georgia(US) all my forty-two years and I can tell you exactly what happens to you without the miracle of air-conditioning Jeremy. You sweat like a whore in church and all you can think of is violence. Yup that's pretty much what happens.

And just so you people who have never been in the American south during July or August it gets hotter than two rats fucking in a wool sock. Uh I hope Dan Rather didn't beat to that one that saying slinging jerkface. Dang!
