POLITICALLY INACCURATE

Bill Maher doesn’t know that the Indonesian President is female:

An Iraqi newspaper has just released a list of those who supported the corrupt, murderous Saddam Hussein regime ... The list includes Indonesian president Megawali Sukarnoputri, an outspoken critic of the U.S. action who pocketed a cool $5 million in profits for his "moral outrage" in the face of "American imperialism."

Doesn’t know how to spell her name, either. Via Wogblog.

poor guy's probably wondering how he got left off of the list. but to be fair, he is at least questioning the purity of their motives...

However, the BBC has proven that "close enough to the truth" is more than adequate, hasn't it? Why should a pinchpenny desire for accuracy be allowed to taint a really good jab at someone you don't like?

Bill Maher is an ass, this is just another example.

Pronouns jump when they cross the International date line.

Funny though how Maher didn't cite the dozens of Euro-weenies he was busily sticking up for a few months ago; but I'll still take a deep breath and give Bill credit where credit is due for taking a baby step back from the brink of utter lunacy.

And how difficult is it to cut and paste a name? My spelling is bad enough without going out of the way to offend people by FUBAR-ing their names.

I'm sure Australia's Prime Minister Hunt can empathise with Megawali :-)

Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Anzar could not be reached for comment.

Ah, President Bash, Tony Bluir and Jack Kirack.

I gotta go with Craig Ranapia.

Let's give Mr. Maher some credit for pointing out the hypocrisy of international leaders who were paid agents of Iraq.

Plus, maybe the editors were confused, not Bill.

Oh, and, dude, your name means "Frog-soft" in Latin. How cool is that?

Bill who?

Or, for that matter: Jeanine who?

Posted by: Tongue Boy at February 4, 2004 at 08:05 AM

Bill is just another American, baby-boomer with his head up his ass. How unusual is that? Not very.

Bill has yet to express an opinion that he didn't crib from someone else. He is unoriginal, unintelligent, and uninteresting. He is the unfunny comedian who wants to be taken seriously. Fortunately for him, there are people who have been victimized by state-funded education and therefore, he has an audience.

Great blog - does anyone have an email for the Australian writer Jim Nolan? I'd be grateful for that information. Tom

Be careful what you name your kids. Megawati sounds like the pet name for a testosterone-charged teenager with a liking for heavy metal.

They should have called her Karen. Or Glenys. Or Audrey.

Posted by: ilibcc at February 4, 2004 at 11:22 AM

Maybe she was named Megawati because she's so bright.

How do make Ranapia "frog soft"?
Rana = frog in Latin (feminine noun)
and
pia (feminine form of pius) = dutiful, kind, affectionate towards one's parent(s), patriotic

rana+pia = patriotic frog.

Re "Rana-pia"

Huh. You're totally right, Peggy Sue.

Apparently, my neurology profs lied to me about the meaning of the term "pia mater." It doesn't mean "tender mother" at all! It means "faithful mother," because it faithfully follows the surface of the brain and spinal cord.

Learn something new every day.

Posted by: buzz harsher at February 5, 2004 at 03:08 AM

Actually 'pia mater' is a medieval latin translation of the arabic term 'umm raqiqah', which indeed means 'tender mother'.

May be those neuro-profs muddled their arabic and latin.
