Yes, nothing ever changes does it. No wait, yes it does...

Who hijacked the Herald and printed that?!?!

Good on 'em!

Why aren’t our cartoons even one tenth as ruthless as theirs?

Why not have Robin Cook be shown with Stalin’s face on his shirt & arguing that the war was wrong & Hussein shown standing nearby in same Stalin-face shirt.

but tim, fisk evidently helped capture saddam, and knew all along about his torture apparatus! at least, that's what he says now

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at December 19, 2003 at 02:47 PM

"But we knew all about him, the raping rooms, the tooth extractors, the knives and the concrete hanging chambers with their clanging doors, and the execution pits."

disgusting.

are you sure that isn't supposed to be rumsfeld? All my lefty friends like to bring up the pic of rummy and sadaam shaking hands....

Posted by: Kevin at December 19, 2003 at 04:29 PM

No, Kevin, it isn't Rumsfeld, but Tim is playing a little joke on us. As anyone can plainly see, it's Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III.

Or maybe it's the Big Lebowski (not the Dude) from the movie of the same name.

Anyway, the one person it certainly doesn't look a bit like is Donald Rumsfeld.

Posted by: Mike G at December 19, 2003 at 04:41 PM

Isn't it annoying when bad cartoonists don't write the names of their characters on them to make it easier for us to identify them.

There are known knowns, that is things we know we know. And there are unknown knowns: things we don't know we know. I think it's meant to be Donald Rumsfeld.

Posted by: Hebert at December 19, 2003 at 04:46 PM

Actually, I thought the cartoon was Fisk shaking hands with Joe Stalin. "We sure had some fun times back in '42 driving the Nazis from Stalingrad, eh Uncle Joe?"

Or maybe that's supposed to be Neil Armstrong with a mustache shaking Fisk's hand. "We went to the moon, Neil. We took that small step for man. We sure were glad Tom Hanks could get us back to Earth in one piece too, but then we had to run across the desert with O.J. when they wanted to kill us...

Fisk: not just a name, not just a verb, but an entire lexicon of idiocy.

I was in a pleasant office christmas party glow when I had the misfortune to read that peace of crap from Robert Fisk - it is shameful to think that we share the same first name. What a perfect way to rationalise his contradictions - Oh I always knew that Saddam was a brutal murderer etc etc etc and WE caught him and now I am kind of happy about that etc etc. Strange that none of us ever caught that tone from your previous articles.

Hey Fiskie - F*ck you and for god's sake change your first name to Weasel or Sh*thead or something more appropriate you backpeddling wannabe Saddam sodomiser.

Posted by: Rob at December 19, 2003 at 05:59 PM

I fear it is Rumsfeld and the reference is meant to suggest it is a meeting of biochem warfare buddies, since Don R as a pharmaceutical chief sold Saddam a couple of items (anthrax for lab research purposes being one of them). This was before Rumsfeld was part of the administration, late eighties is about right.

"During his long and terrible reign, he would deluge us journalists with treatises on foreign affairs and women's rights..."

I've just recently (since 2002) become aware of Fisk's writing, so I may be wrong in assuming that Fisk and "us journalists" lapped up such "treatises" like kittens lapping up a saucerful of milk. Am I? Judging from what I've read, I doubt it.

Oh, Dave, I'm so tired of people searching the last 20 or 30 years straining to find the hypocrisy angle. And it is straining, isn't it? Rumsfeld personally sold Saddam personally a couple of items? Was it two? Was one of them toothpaste? And the anthrax, was it the scary kind bred for WMD or the kind veterinarians study to try to keep cows from getting sick? But setting aside this particular case, what is your problem with hypocrisy, anyway? Everyone seems to know, to just know, that hypocrisy is simply a bad thing. I think it's more complicated than that: There are so many people I wish could learn to spare us their authenticity. But coming back to Rumsfeld, even if he's learned to do the public good despite having committed some private wrong long ago, good for him. And coming back to you, isn't your prissy ironic pose ("I fear it is Rumsfeld") one of the flavors of hypocrisy?

A little OT but in the general cartoon spirit of things, how surreal is this page from The Sun: Hung up by the baubles

Posted by: dc at December 19, 2003 at 09:48 PM

"As anyone can plainly see, it's Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III."

lmao

i figure saddam is a ginger-guy (i'm a maryanne, myself).

NOte. He thinks "WE" think the war is over.

Whew. I thought he was including normal people in his "we." Must be the delusional Charles II tope of Royal We.

Posted by: TheYeti at December 19, 2003 at 10:47 PM

I dunno, guys. It looks like FDR to me. But I had no idea he was pals with Cheech Marin. Learn something new every day.

Posted by: Bryan C at December 19, 2003 at 11:41 PM

Fisk writes, "And we think the war is over."

My recollection is that the President told us over the weekend that the war was not over, by a long shot. As far back as his 2001 Address to the Nation, he was saying this war--the war against terrorism--may not be over during our lifetimes.

So, I ask Fisk, to paraphrase Instapundit, "What do you mean WE, sh*thead?"

Posted by: Rick The Lawyer at December 19, 2003 at 11:59 PM

Is that supposed to be a pile of chain from leg-irons on the floor behind Saddam, or did he just sh*t out his brain?

Posted by: Chris at December 20, 2003 at 07:15 AM

I always find it amusing when people talk about Rumsfeld or Bush or the Republicans or America's friendship with Saddam. I mean we are some godawful friends judging by how we've treated him. In fact we can't do anything to him to could possibly infringe on our great close cordial relationship. Based on this, I say look out Britain, Australia....as friends of ours you have much to fear.

Posted by: RC at December 20, 2003 at 07:39 AM

Well, they put partial tariff barriers in place for Australian steel. It won't be long until Howard is in US custody being given a dental examination.

If you haven't done so you gotta read the Fisk story that spawned this stuff. Priceless, as that TV ad says.
