What conservatives don’t like
It goes without saying that conservatives don’t like stupid liberals. And guess what — we also dislike stupid conservatives.
I finally got around to setting up hotlink protection on my own sites. I don’t have the nerve to use the sort of image Steve H. is using, but I’ve cooked up one that is obnoxious enough in a mild way. It’s eyeball-safe, but I’ll put it in the extended entry section anyway:

So far experiments with one of my Blogger sites show that the protection works, as in attempts to steal a picture from one of my sites will yield a blank space on an unapproved blog, but I haven’t managed to make my redirect image show up. I can’t figure out what I’ve done wrong; the instructions seem pretty straightforward. Maybe it’s some sort of server-resetting thing.

I always had huge trouble with hotlinking. So I set up two images. The first just said, “Please don’t steal my bandwidth or something unpleasant will happen.” Then, if they still didn’t change it, I replaced the image with the Goatce.xe picture.

You can also make your redirect image really, really wide (like 2000px). That way if they’re displaying your image in a webpage, there’s a fair-to-good chance that it’ll blow up their layout, depending how the site is designed.

Did you put the redirect image in the same directory as the images you want to protect from hotlinking, thus protecting the redirect image itself from hotlinking?
I’ve done that.

I put the image in my root (public_html) folder, or thought that was my root folder. Anyway, I decided to shut off the hotlink protection. I just can’t deal with it right now. When I am more in the mood to play with the site I’ll turn it back on.
