Compare and contrast

Men.

Babies.*

(Link to the Arlington Cemetary story via Charles Austin. Link to the Mefi prattlefest via Michele.)

*PS: I am exempting from this designation, of course, the people trying to defend the toy drive against the tiny minds that seem to comprise most of the contributors to this list. Maybe the Mefi'ers are jealous that the Iraqi kids will be getting toys and they won't.

Hadn't looked at MeFi before. Appears, from cursory examination, to be Indymedia with a dictionary.

gah. the mefi response to a good-hearted gesture on the part of Chief Wiggles is why I am fast coming to hate the majority of the human race.

why do I click on links like that when I know it's just going to make me mad/depressed?

Because you're too strong a person to let yourself hide your head in the sand?

It's important to see what these creeps really are, to recognize and remember that they're out there.

I liked this post from the thread:

"'Shut up' really doesn't come up to tried and true Mefi standards"

When did Mefi get standards?

MeFi: The "thinking liberal" 's IndyMedia.

If anyone ever runs into a thinking liberal, let me know.

Love the part about depleted uranium. Faced with the WHO and other, er, sources of some sort of actual scientific background, the anti-DU zealot replies with... a link to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Well, hell! We all know the PI has more medical and scientific know-how than the WHO or the NRPB, or, well, the entire body of scientific and medical research on the subject. (And given that the PI's sources were "geiger counter readings of shell holes done for us by... er... Saddam's People...", and that the radiology involved simply doesn't jibe with that, well, one might think the PI was wrong. Unless, of course, one had an ideological axe to grind and was wilfully ignorant of the science involved...)

Also amusing is the fact that MetaFilter membership is, at least for the moment, closed... so if you're not already One With Landru, you can't join up and provide Even More Research showing that DU is not What Killed Marie Curie.

(If that last bit makes no sense, it's because you're more clueful than the guy who posted a link implying DU is anything like the radium and other deliciously active isotopes that eventually killed Curie ... in her 60s.)

What a nasty pack of creeps over there at MiFi.. Somebody tries to do a good deed and they just can't stop with their filthy politics for a second. They don't give a rat's ass about Iraq or Iraqis...only about their politics and about being "right." Scum.

Indeed. Last time I checked (and y'all feel free to fact check my ass into next week if I'm wrong) DU has less radiation output than granite. Granted, it's pretty damn toxic if you should happen to ingest it in powdered form, and I wouldn't want to rub it all over my wang, but it's really only dangerous if you're recieving it at high velocity, when it's self sharpening and pyroforic qualities come to the fore.

One of my favorite substances to make into armor piercing projectiles, with tungsten steel being a close second.

Posted by: Eichra Oren at September 25, 2003 at 03:15 PM

Breathing DU dust probably wouldn't be the best thing to do either.

But my, those MeFis are a bunch of wankers. Well, 80% of them anyway, there do seem to be a few people there with functioning brains.

...and I wouldn't want to rub it all over my wang...

Sissy.

This is the third comment thread I've seen today with this phentermine spam on it. Is that what will finally implode the blog world? Spam on comment threads? what a horrible thought . . .

PS I also had never visited MeFi before. Ack - it's worse than Stand Down.

Posted by: Yehudit at September 29, 2003 at 03:51 AM

Yes, it's a new thing that's been going around. I've removed the spam, as you can see.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at September 29, 2003 at 05:53 AM

Not all that new. I've been getting it off and on for months, back when I was on BugSplat even.

Thanks for the support and I wanted to thank those who tried to defend the chief over there at metafilter. I'm a member there, but rarely do I visit any longer. I guess I look at the world through rose colored glasses as much as I can; I just can see the bad or be cynical about every little thing. Unfortunately, there seems to be too many in this world that only see the bad or look for alterior motives where none exist.

Wow. I too especially like the razor-sharp rhetorical counterpoint the DU troll came up with: "DU's not dangerous - WHO and NRPB say so!" "But Marie Curie died of cancer!" Her husband got run over by a horse-drawn carriage. Ban horses now! What a cosmic level of disconnect from logic.

This whole thread sickened me. Talk about no turn left unstoned. Chief Wiggles deserves a freakin' medal, but in the absence of that gets mega-kudos from me (sadly until my ass-bitingly stupid bank allows my debit card to work overseas that's all I can give).
