Things that make me go "argh"

The phrase "hat tip." I see it everywhere. Make it die.

Yes. Please. Quickly. I don't even care if it's painfull, just as long as it is quick.

How do you feel about attribution?

Posted by: Tiger at August 24, 2003 at 12:46 PM

I tried to think of something other than "link via" and used "link fodder" for a bit. But it just didn't grab me long term.

How about a good ol' Hee-Haw "Sa-a-a-al-OOT!"

Posted by: McGehee at August 24, 2003 at 02:15 PM

Ok, sure.

Suggested alternates?

Posted by: Wind Rider at August 24, 2003 at 03:33 PM

I don't know. How about "iguana," or corn! nuts!" Anything else.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at August 24, 2003 at 04:56 PM

And heck, people have even already left some suggestions. personally, I use "via," though I am getting sick of that.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at August 24, 2003 at 04:57 PM

I use "via" as well, but maybe I'll try to be more creative.

A pinch in the ass? That could work sometimes. Purple nurple? Cup of coffee? Big wet kiss?

Hey, at least we try, unlike some people who never credit their sources.

I like "big wet kiss". However, having just returned from another viewing of PotC, I shall henceforth be using, "a hearty avast!"

Well, maybe not.

Nipple pinch.

I wonder how many even know they are using a line from a well-known cartoonist, Hatlo? Gone for some time, alas, and seldom political (unlike his contemporary, Al Capp, who did not doff his chapeau) his cartoon was a regular staple at many bewspapers.

Hey, does having a head-gear related name help establish you as a cartoonist?

The ideal replacement is, as michele was about to indicate, an "ass tap".

You may thank me anytime.

How about "boink?"

Posted by: Dean Esmay at August 26, 2003 at 03:09 AM

"Via" may be boring and staid, but it gets the point across concisely, which I think makes its usage preferred.

Not every word or phrase has to be tweaked up to show off a writer's originality, and I'd prefer less of them were, as after prolonged usage the cutesiness grates exquisitely on the nerves.

I don't remember who said it initially (now I think of it, may have been Andrea, actually) but "graf" must die as well.

I meant fewer. I'd "prefer fewer of them were." I'm sorry. The English teacher in my head would not stop shrieking at me until I posted this.

Posted by: ilyka at August 26, 2003 at 05:52 AM

I use "Link courtesy of". I'm not fond of most of the alternatives.

Posted by: timekeeper at August 26, 2003 at 08:40 AM

Keep it simple: "from" for persons, if known; "via" for websites.
