That intersection in Baghdad

"The Corner of Shock and Awe" works for me.

The other night, Niles and I sat lump-like in front of the TV, watching dawn break over that intersection. The TV people insisted on saying things despite having nothing to say, so we tuned them out and watched the traffic.

We decided that the first civilian order of business Tommy Franks needs to tackle is traffic school for everybody. Cars went through on red lights, they stopped on green lights for traffic going through a red light in the other direction. This wasn't such a big deal when there were hardly any cars on the road, but they kept doing it even when the traffic got pretty heavy. We fully expected to see an accident there.

This, I thought, is the one place where the French would've come in handy. They drive the same way. Maybe the Italians can do it instead.

Came across your site while pondering the exact same thing myself. What's the deal with that intersection, and why hasn't anyone crashed yet?

Ha!! Now we know ... see 'travel and road conditions' under the State Department's Iraq Travel Advisory.
