Quatloos, anyone?

I've had a few questions on the subject of quatloos; specifically, on what the heck I mean by that. Well, fans of Star Trek OS (the Original Series) would know that it was a reference to classic take-Kirk's-shirt-off-and-beat-him-up episode "The Gamesters of Triskelion."

All right, which one of you is Spock's brain?
"All right, which one of you is Spock's brain?"

The plot goes as follows: Kirk and a couple of his sidekicks get kidnapped and taken to a planet far, far away, where they are made to fight other kidnapped aliens for the amusement of a trio of bored talking brains. The brains, having run out of things to do without arms and legs, gamble on the fights for "quatloos." This picture shows Kirk complaining to the brains about the way the tacky vinyl harness he is forced to wear is so twenty-second century, and clashes with the rest of his outfit.

Too bad they didn't have a T1 and Internet porn on Triskelion.

That girl Kirk nailed had the most amazing TV breasts of the mid-60's.

That's the ep! I knew it was Star Trek, I just drew a blank on the ep it was from.

And it chafes, too.

Yes, I see now that my old-fogey was showing. My mama would have whipped the tar out of me for watching breasts on teevee. Thank god the library was in walking distance...

Was that the episode with the blue-haired girl that Kirk, um, well, you know?

"400 quatloos that the bloggers prove untrainable!"

I decided to use "quatloos" in the latest post at Nostradumbass.

It was an horrific example of 3rd Season cheesiness, not to mention yet another apalling example of Kirk disregarding the Prime Directive when it inconvenienced/offended him (and then bailing out on the planet after he'd completely changed the society -- or so he hoped).

And what's that Pergium mining facility doing in the background?

But it's a great word.

oh my lord. i can't believe you deigned to explain this to everyone! i was so impressed that i actually knew, and i thought it was just our geeky secret!

sob

oh, and just to PROVE i'm a geek, i think the best line from this ep is when Spock comments along the lines of "why would i wish to pursue an undomesticated waterfowl?"

although the pinky-haired one cuddling Chekov and burbling "maybe we'll be selected for each other" is damn close.

Points for obsurity. Quatoos are now a staple of my vocabulary.

That may be a classic Kirk-with-his-shirt-off-gets-beaten-up, episode, but is it more classic than Patterns of Force, the "Nazi" episode where barechested, whipped, Kirk actually is mounted by Spock, and grunts and groans as Spock goes about his business? Oh, and they're both in bondage. (One picture here.

And I trust you're familiar with this absolute must-read/listen page?

http://www.quatloos.com/

is the Cyber-Museum of Scams and Frauds...

well worth a look and another example of how miscellaneous searches turn up useful connections.
