Well, I had to post a comment to this; a snarky one, of course, because I am the OS (Original Snarkosaurus).
PS: how could I forget? For more on the raging Komments Kontroversy*, go here. For more Is It Snobbery or Is It Autonomy?, go here and then here. (Say, when is the invasion going to start? Hurry, Dubya, the bloggers are starting to eat their young.)
*I could call it the Krazy Komments Kontroversy and make it an Aaagghh! Racism! threefer.
Posted by Andrea Harris at January 16, 2003 11:21 AMBlog comments are stupid. I would never write one.
Posted by: Steve H. at January 16, 2003 at 11:25 AMAndrea, I think this is the only site I read regularly where the comments don't slow the page load. On other blogs I often hit "escape" to stop comment loading, just so I can read the main content.
This is part of the reason I don't have comments on my blog. Also, because post after post with Comments(0) next to it gets depressing.
ACD's remark about getting paid to host comments is typical of him. You'll remember that he wanted to be paid for backing up his own assertions with cites, too.
Posted by: Angie Schultz at January 16, 2003 at 12:10 PMMost of the comments programs available for Blogspot users are slow as heck, because for some reason beyond my capabilities of understanding, even though they are separate programs hosted on separate servers, they load when the blogspot site is loaded. YACCS and Enetation are two services notorious for that. So I don't blame Blogspot users for not setting up comments.
Sometimes that "comments (0)" is depressing, especially when it's attached to a post you wanted comments on, but to your tossed off remark on, oh I don't know, SUVs, there are 295 comments. I don't know what is more depressing, actually...
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 16, 2003 at 12:42 PMI think it just depends on whether you want to be part of the blogging "community" or just have your own little private island on the Internet. I have no real problem either way. I sometimes wish that some of my favorite comment-less blogs had comments but I'm not going to get all net-nanny about it.
Posted by: Lynn at January 16, 2003 at 12:44 PMI find the zeros a downer as well. Especially when it's a post I really thought was a good one. Or the one comment I get is snarky and rather mean spirited and totally misunderstands what I was trying to say.
But such is life :)
Posted by: Ith at January 16, 2003 at 01:00 PMI admit, I get tired of making Photoshop pictures of Jimmy Carter being sodomized by Fidel Castro and then getting no applause.
Posted by: Steve H. at January 16, 2003 at 03:28 PMHeck, I just figured you snagged that off of Reuters.
