Dave at Dave Does the blog reviews the Fellowship of the Ring DVD set. His reactions pretty much agree with mine. I'll have more on this later. (Contains spoilers, if you care about such things.)
Posted by Andrea Harris at January 6, 2003 08:49 PMThankee, ma'am.
Now just need to carve out some time to watch discs 2-4 ... plus the audio commentaries ... plus ...
Posted by: *** Dave at January 6, 2003 at 10:00 PMI know the things that were put back were not huge, but it made it a much richer movie for me. I wish they hadn't even bothered cutting Two Towers...
Posted by: Solonor at January 6, 2003 at 10:13 PMI just decided to forego sleep to watch it. Insomnia can be a boon. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade...
The interviews are charming, and bonus! there is very little Viggo. And what little commentary they do have from him is confined to the movie itself, thank Bog. Also: there is a neat thing you'll find out about the program used to put all those neat flame effects in the Balrog scenes: they didn't have that program when they started filming, but then someone created it and they found out about it. All I know is it really tempts me to get a high-powered Mac and acquire that program and a digital camera and make my own flame-covered movied. Fire is good, fire is cool, heh heh...
I haven't even finished watching the fourth disc, and you should listen to the voice-overs. My only regret now is that I have a twenty-inch tv. Now I wish I'd sprung for the bigger one, but I didn't want to wait for delivery.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 6, 2003 at 10:14 PMSolonor: what you said about TT. I could actually see the cuts. I wonder if that was deliberate? As well as the fact that the movie was exactly one minute under three hours long. I can see Jackson now: "You want it under three hours?" (Snip snip snip hack hack hack.) "Here you are then!" He did do a bunch of zombie films after all. He's not afraid to use a sharp instrument, I'll bet.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 6, 2003 at 10:16 PMOK, I thought so already, but anyone who shares my pyromania is (reverting to my native Bostonian here) wicked cool. ;-) Wire, wire, wire...I've got barbed wire in my room! (Sorry; those blessed few who can should fill in the remaining dialogue with the voices in their heads).
Ahem. Now then, on the actual subject at hand, I do remember Elijah Wood saying Jackson was committed to cutting less of RoTK, something to the effect of "it'll be as long as it takes," and that it would almost certainly be closer to at least 3 1/2 hours.
Posted by: David Jaroslav at January 6, 2003 at 11:25 PMHow can there be spoilers when the movie's was out a year ago?
Hey! Folks! Gandalf falls down a big hole in the Mines of Moria!
I've always wanted to do something like that.
;-)
Posted by: Meryl Yourish at January 6, 2003 at 11:30 PMI'll bet Gollum destroys the ring in the end. Jackson's foreshadowing is that strong. :)
Posted by: Solonor at January 7, 2003 at 12:40 AMI've seen almost all the 4th disc, and have gotten through the actors and directors commentary. Viggo seemed so thoughtful and well spoken -- then he went and ruined it! Bad Viggo! I really enjoyed PJ's commentary. Learned all sorts of little tidbits. It seemed like he means to add even more footage to the movies for another DVD set, once all the movies are out. Maybe it was just an off the cuff comment, but I can hope!
Posted by: Ith at January 7, 2003 at 12:44 AMOn the one hand, I can appreciate wanting to further refine thing, and to want to take the time, once time allows, to do it right.
On the other hand, I really hate the tendency these days to release progressively more elaborate DVD sets -- "Now with three more cut scenes!" -- each time the market dies down. (I hate it with graphic novels/TPB collections, too.) If I'm going to splurge for the Super Del Grande Plutonium Edition, then, by God, I don't want to hear about the Maxisimmus Turbodium Edition With Flavor Crystals coming out next year.
(The "spoilers," btw, were references to things in TTT, not FotR.)
