Could someone please tell me why my freakin' computer keeps freezing up??? Besides the fact that it is obsolete and has barely enough RAM to load Win98, that is. Grrr.
Posted by Andrea Harris at January 1, 2003 02:52 AMMemory leaks and memory space errors. I need a lot more information from you than what you provided to really help, however.
Posted by: hbchrist at January 1, 2003 at 02:11 PMOh, this thing is just fubar'ed. I should probably at least defrag it, and run AdAware (I'll bet I have lots of those stupid hidden ads everywhere), and so forth. I'm planning on getting a new one soon, which I hope will not have all the problems this one does.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 1, 2003 at 02:23 PMHate to say it, but it's probably Windows 98 itself. Nasty operating system. Depending on what else you use your computer for, you may want to look at Windows XP Professional or Linux (which is more to learn but would be more stable and work on a less-powerful system than Windows).
Posted by: Henry at January 1, 2003 at 08:51 PMI've done the Linux thing and liked it, but unfortunately I don't have time to fool with it. My plans are to buy a new system with XP Pro on it. One of these days.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 1, 2003 at 09:23 PMWindows 9x is prone to "installation rot", where after a few years it's corrupted itself in undiagnosable ways. I don't think anyone's quite sure why though. The only guaranteed way to fix it is to wipe C:\Windows and reinstall (or upgrade to XP Pro, as has been noted).
Posted by: Ian S. at January 2, 2003 at 01:55 PMIf you can get Win2k cheap, it'd be a great upgrade. And RAM is very cheap these days. Zip on over to Pricewatch and you can probably double the amount on your machine for 50 bucks (if that!), if it has that little.
